Abstract

Shelter being one of the basic needs for human survival, it plays further more critical role for urban poor and slum dwellers, Due to the low source of income urban poor are forced to live in unhygienic and pathetic conditions. This paper is aimed to collect data and study the characteristics of dwelling of urban poor, analyze and come up with a prototype unit of dwelling for urban poor, a dwelling which fits into their needs, which is cost effective, easy to build and environmentally sustainable. For this slum dwelling units at Borabanda Dump yard is taken for case study, Data is collected through field visits, interviews, and documentation and observations done during visits. Thorough analysis is carried out through research and options and alternatives are searched. Prototype unit is devised taking into considerations of options available from the study carried out.
