Seasonal Transformation of Urban Space: A Case Study during Durga Puja

Abstract


A city has its dedicated spaces for public gatherings and other activities. Here in Kolkata, India, Durga Puja Festival transforms common residential neighbourhoods into ‘urban centres’. This is a seasonal transformation, comes once in a year. The identity of an urban place is changed through social inclusion, temporary architectural installations, temporary management solutions. Spaces is enriched with different people’s activities. The overall cityscape is being illuminated for the couple of days.
