“How culture impacts the development of a city- Building science of Ujjaini as mentioned in Meghduta.”

Uma Kumari

Abstract

Ujjain city is more than culture and tradition. It is a resemblance to India’s powerful history as well as philosophies of town planning models. Being the city of Great rulers like King Vikramaditya and the great poet Kalidas, it is also a living example of heritage. This historical and ancient city is 5000 years old and known to be the best city in Adi Brahma Puran. Ujjaini
has been the capital of the ancient Avanti kingdom and has kept its connection to the past era. However, the phase has changed and the city has transformed a lot i.e. in sense of developments and expansion of the city’s major and minor arenas. A timeless elegance that is refined and
stands mannerism showcases the culture of this place. Although the change also occurred in planning the city's settlement pattern and acquiring a planning model, the cultural influence is still prominent enough to support the river line and garth as key development nodes. Architecture and Culture are always interdependent and not separable. The city lies in harmony with the positive vibes of many temples present. This research is to identify the development character of this city and how it has been shaped by culture and tradition with time.
