Khanewal Railway Colony, A Colonial Development in the Region.

Adnan Bashir Sheikh, Munazzah Akhtar

Abstract

As the establishment of railway colonies by Britishers later became a
prominent part of the major cities of Pakistan. These played an important role in the accommodation of a sizeable community of the city. The spacious planning and features of these colonies attracted the masses and provided an idea to the developers about the development of the housing societies and how to cater the needs of the public in the societies. So, the research is intended to study the design layout and principles of the railway colonies. Which may provide a basic understanding of the design principles of
residential neighborhoods developed by the Britishers in the Sub-continent. This study may also include some of the case studies from the British established colonies. A design layout and important features of the case study will be discussed and analyzed in detail and different aspects will be covered. Khanewal city was developed along with the railway station. The city was planned on a grid iron pattern and was divided into blocks. All amenities were provided at that time including proper sewerage system. The city was planned and developed in or around 1917 (as design phase was started in 1915).
