Making Architecture Visible for Visually Impaired in Sharp Memorial Blind School

Garima Khali, Tarique Anwar

Abstract

The word “visual” portrays two different meanings when it comes to architecture and visually impaired at one platform. In Architecture where visual perception is one of the most important aspects for sighted people, visually impaired people tend to focus more on perception of other senses and qualities. They are therefore able to appreciate other spatial qualities too. This paper seeks to discover the connecting points between these two different groups, i.e. Architects and visually impaired followed by psychological aspects acting as a catalyst to the research. Through analysis, observation and surveys, an attempt to identify the common ground between the two entities will be put into consideration. The paper also talks about the implementation of local bye laws and important design aspects in the school for visually impaired, which may act as a scope for better intervention for the spaces within the campus respectively.
