Laurie Baker’s Design Approach – In the Light of Building Materials

Paridhi Mathur

Abstract

A five days stay at the LBC Campus taught one lesson most of all- to use things only, as and when required generating minimum wastage- ensuring that the materials are used in an optimum manner. This was the underlying concept from the daily chores to the buildings constructed by Baker. If Laurie Baker’s concept was to be summarized in two descriptive phrases, they would be: Sustainability and cost effectiveness. This paper aims at compiling the essence of building practices as preached by Baker and his brainchild- Cost ford.
