An Assessment of Utility Services Provision in Korail Slum, Dhaka

Tanvir Ahmad

Abstract

The condition of urban slums is rapidly deteriorating with the rapid influx of migration towards the major urban centers in Bangladesh. Urban slum settlements are generally excluded from publicly provided resources such as access to formal education, healthcare services, safe water supply and hygienic sanitation. In Dhaka, dwellers of slum and squatter settlements live with significantly low living standards in terms of environmental, social, cultural and utility services. The informal settlements at Korail are considered being the biggest slum in Dhaka. The present study was an effort to understand the condition of utility service facilities-water supply, sanitation supply and waste management system in slums of Dhaka city. This study found that provisioning and quality of utility facilities are very much unsatisfactory in Korail slum due to lack of proper water supply, sanitation and waste disposal system.
