Abstract

Rajshahi is a divisional city and the population of this city is increasing gradually. That’s why the existing transportation infrastructure cannot accomplish the present demand. The introduction of a new road or the expansion of the existing ones to relieve the excessive traffic pressure is a futile exercise. But this can create a different impact on the local community. The objective of this study is to identify the impacts which the construction projects produce on housing and the environment both during and after construction and to formulate community-based strategies to mitigate the impacts. To fulfill the requirements of the objective various tools of the participatory rural appraisal method, mainly pair-wise ranking method, cause–effect diagram, SWOT analysis, and dream map have been applied. The findings of the study revealed that the new road construction or the expansion activity can create an impact on various sectors such as social, economic, housing, environmental, etc. This study mainly focuses on the impact on housing and the environment sectors. Through this study, some community-based strategies have been formulated to mitigate the impact of a new road construction on housing and environment. Thereafter, some policy measures have been recommended, and by enforcement of these policies, the impact of road construction or expansion can be reduced to a large extent.
