“BASIC SERVICE INITIATIVES FOR URBAN POOR IN BHOPAL, INDIA”

Abstract


Presently more than 30 percent of population live in urban areas of India; as exclaimed in census report. The urbanization in India has increased, leading to urban poverty. Basic services initiatives for urban poor refer to programs that aim to provide water, sanitation, health care, education, and food security to the people living in dilapidated urban areas. These basic service initiatives is essential to improve the quality of life for the urban poor. This paper gives insight from literature reviews on various initiatives from government on basic services to urban poor. The paper took case study of basic service initiatives to urban poor at intervened slum localities Madrasi colony of Bhopal. The paper evaluates physical & socio-economic status of the beneficiaries by analyzing their perceptions & satisfaction level. The paper concludes with the observations and recommendations on basic services initiatives for urban poor to improve their quality of life.
