Muhaiminul Islam, Md. Rashiqul Islam, Anutosh Das

Abstract

Shift share analysis plays a vital rule to investigate regional economic growth, competitiveness and composition of industrial sector. Regional employment growth varies from decade to decade due to transformation in major activity sector. Analysis of economic growth by sector of a specific region helps community leaders, policy makers and researchers in better decision making and problem solving. This study tries to compare the regional employment growth of divisional cities of Bangladesh in terms of main activity sector and to find out the internal factor behind the regional growth. This study also tries to figure out the basic and the non-basic activities sectors. Shift share analysis and location quotient method is used to assess the employment growth. Then the growth in different activity sector is compared with sector theory. The regional growth showed employment declined in Barisal and Sylhet within the 10-year period and increase in employment in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Mymen singh division. Among them Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna are most progressive division. Service and industry are the most robust sectors of employment growth from 1991 to 2001. This study will assist in combination with the other regional analysis and helping database to assess industrial structure by using shift and share more explicitly.
