Strategies for Traffic Management Plan – Case study of Bardoli Town

Abstract


The traffic problem in urban area is an important issue that affects development and restricts economic development of cities if not addressed properly. Development plans are prepared by considering population projections, zoning requirements, and economic issues, but the traffic issues are not addressed. It also aims at suggesting ways to integrate traffic management plan with the development plan. This study is based on Bardoli, with rise in population of 1.8% per annum against 8.9% rise in
vehicles recorded from which around 9% rise is observed in two wheelers and 6% is 4 wheelers. This study aims at giving strategies or measures to overcome current traffic issues of Bardoli town and plan for future. The problems of traffic are identified through primary and secondary survey. The main survey includes household, origin-destination, traffic volume, and parking surveys. The percentage of vehicle in traffic volume count survey are in proportion of 61% for bike, 21% for car, and 12% for auto
rickshaw. From the study, v/c ratio is 1.1 and level of service falls under E and F category. The survey is conducted of three busy roads on intermediate section and two major junctions like Alankar circle, Maroli junction, all together about 257 interviewees are approached. And information is collected. In conclusion some suggestions are given to incorporate “traffic management plan” in development plan. To mitigate above issues short-term solution and long-term solution are proposed. Short-term and long-term strategies include traffic signal, zebra crossing at different location, off street parking and Decentralization of activities, public transport, respectively. Traffic plan will be guiding documents for all administrators and politicians for continuity of resolving the issue by allocation of funds andacquisition of land, shifting of activated decentralize activities, making of hawker lots, acquisition of identified spaces for traffic and parking.
