A Study of Thermal Impact of Vertical Greenery System in High-End Residential Building of India

TANYA RANI, Dr. DEBASHIS SANYAL

Abstract

In a developing country like India, the demand for residential units have increased by 29% by July 2021 (according to IBEF); particularly in metropolitan cities, resulting in a scarcity of land resources. Vertical settlement in high-rise structures is being adapted by many cities as a primary solution to this extended density. As a result increase in the urban heat island effect is evident and affecting the thermal comfort of the living environment in urban cities. Furthermore, India widely experiences hot and humid climate which further degrades the level of comfort in urban areas. Vertical greenery system (VGS) attempts to be a long-term sustainable solution for maintaining thermal equilibrium. It works as an insulator and decreases indoor air temperature. VGS creates a cavity in between, which is specified with higher humidity and lower temperature. The thermal performance of VGS is also influenced by the ventilation provided in the enclosed space. In this research, a comparison between the thermal performances of various types of VGS in different situations is being discussed in terms of indoor air temperature, indoor humidity, ventilation, cavity humidity, and cavity surface temperature.
