Solutions of Landscape Design for Stormwater Management in the Urban Open-Green Areas in Konya

Filiz Çelik

Abstract

Water is the source of life and at the same time, it is an important element of both the landscape and the landscape design. Water is among the most challenging natural resources to manage effectively, in recent century. Water is getting scarce day by day for a lot of reasons such as the climate change, population growth and demand increase, consumption-based lifestyles, urbanization, and industrialization etc. To find solutions of water scarcity have gained considerable importance among the landscape designers. In recent years, stormwater has begun to use instead of water. Stormwater is the water that originates during precipitation events and snow melts. Stormwater is also an important resource for the availability of readily available water. Landscape architects consider stormwater management as a foundation of the design process. Besides, stormwater has also become an element of landscape design and new design trends have emerged about stormwater. In natural landscapes such as forests and in cultural landscape such as green areas the soil absorbs much of the stormwater and plants helps to hold the stormwater. In the urban landscape, new solutions have carried out for managing stormwater better and providing natural water cycle processes. In this study, it is aimed to research on how it can be used stormwater as a direct design element of urban open-green areas. This study presents urban stormwater management solutions for the urban open-green spaces in Konya.
