Planning and Management of Water for Green Building

Prakash Chandra Tamrakar

Abstract

Green buildings are designed, constructed and operated to improve the betterment of their occupants and support a healthy community and natural environment, as compare to a conventional building. Green rating has been started in many countries for the building. In India, three agencies have their own rating system. Water conservation, Water quality and conservation, Water conservation measures are among one from the
various criteria for rating of buildings. Though India has good monsoon and ample rainfall but several cities in India have become water stressed. Lack of proper drinking water facilities and contamination of water leads to outbreak of various epidemics like diarrhea, viral infection, malaria and many other infectious diseases. On other hand, during the monsoon, many States across India affected due to flood. Recurrent flood causes several
damage to various properties and infrastructure like transportation networks, electricity generation and distribution equipments, etc. in addition to outbreak of waterborne diseases. This paper is aiming to fill the lack of proper water facilities & avoid flood during Monsoon as per need of green building rating requirement. Water resource can be augmented through recharging of groundwater resources, rainwater harvesting, conservation of natural water resources like river water bodies etc., dual plumbing and recycling of waste water, as well as Sustainable Drainage Systems to focus on reducing nuisances from local flooding and waste
water.
