Thermal Performance of Building Materials—A Comparative Study of GRIHA Materials for Composite Climate

Nikhil Agrawal, Abhilash Ulahannan

Abstract

The study compares thermal comfort values of stationary shop Sprint at DIT University, Dehradun, in composite climate for traditional construction, furnished and with GRIHA certified materials with ideal comfort conditions. Design Builder v4.5 will be used for simulation of 3 materials, namely, traditional RCC roof with brickwork and plaster, modular materials AAC and Gypsum drywall, and rat-trap brickwork equivalent to GRIHA certified porous walling blocks, for Dehradun (composite climate). Obtained results will be compared against existing values. It gives a base for comparison of three different combinations of construction materials and which option is most efficient (or lies close to existing values) out of them. This study can be referred to during early stages of design to evaluate which combination fits within client’s budget while not compromising with sustainability and efficiency. Further studies can be done to evaluate other GRIHA materials and their combinations to check if it follows the same pattern as this study.
