Evaluation of the Land Supply and Housing Related Provisions in the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP)

Tanvir Ahmad

Abstract

Absence of satisfactory lodging for Bangladesh's substantial urban populace is clearly a key issue in the majority of the urban areas and optional towns in Bangladesh. The lodging circumstance of Bangladesh is getting progressively intense with the progression of time. In a quickly developing city like Dhaka, lodging comes up as a noteworthy issue. The improvement of lodging and related foundation can't adapt to the development of populace. As a result, the gap between the increasing housing needs (due to rapid urbanization) and supply is becoming wider and wider every day. Shortage of buildable land and high land price has made it almost impossible for most of the urban population to own a piece of land for constructing a detached or semi-detached house. The affordability issue is another serious aspect of housing problems. The Detailed Area Plan (DAP), formulated under the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP) (1995-2015), provides detailed planning proposals to meet the need of land supply and housing of the city. This research article critically evaluates the land supply and housing related provisions in the Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP) in order to identify the limitations of the DMDP for solving land supply and housing problems of Dhaka city as well as to recommend proposals for easing housing problems.
