Protection and Integration of EcoSensitiveAreas

Superna Gandotra, Kiranjeet Kaur Jassal, Leena Prasad Aphale

Abstract

The expansion of artificial constructs leads to the release of hazardous and obnoxious substances with rapid economic development in India which
has led to ecological and environmental emergencies. The extinction of natural resources has also been highly recognized in recent years and analysing the need to protect the ecological sensitive zones and vulnerable areas is our foremost priority. We used remotely sensed data to delimit the ecological protection restrictions in order to protect the ecological resources. One such
example is Dal Lake of Jammu and Kashmir where the encroachments and other activities have shrunk the lake from its original size of 22 square km to about 10 square km and the capacity of the lake has also shrunk to 40% due to which sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a 10 member committee to finalise draft notification for declaring Dal Lake and its surrounding areas as
Eco-sensitive zones [ESZ’s].Apart from these aspects it has been seen that no law speaks about ESZ’s.So,to conserve these ESZ’s and particularly the Dal Lake various measures has been proposed such as Afforestation, Removal of excess weeds on continuous basis as well as removal of excess houseboats and hotels and rehabilitation of their owners and inhabitants living in and around Dal
lake at a suitable place. Therefore it is required that Government, Stakeholders and others should collaborate with each other for balancing sustainable / ESZ’s along with economic development.
