A Review Study of Plastic Wastes and its Effect on Environment

Anamika Raghuvanshi

Abstract

In the present world, the usage of polythene is increasing day by day and its degradation is becoming a great challenge. It is estimated that annually about 500 billion to 1 trillion polythene carry bags are being produced by various means around the globe. Plastics are light weighted, durable, corrosion resistant materials, strong, and inexpensive. Polythene is durable and needs up to 1000 years for natural degradation in the environment. Various researchers have reported many harmful adverse effects of the plastic in the environment and human health. Nowadays biodegradable plastics are considered as the environmental friendly. The polymers of plastic as such at room temperatures are not considered as toxic. The toxic properties of plastic are usually found when heat is produced from the food material in which they are contained or covered and then they produce serious human health problems. The current review article covers the generation of plastic wastes and its degradation and effects on the environment.
