Abstract

An ancient Manora Fort was built by Maratha Ruler in 1814-1815 as victory Tower, eight storied hexagonal Minaret style. Due to unstable ground of sea shore and Indian Ocean tsunami in Dec. 2004, the fort was severally damaged by natural disaster, along with other monuments. The renovation and improvement of infrastructures were made by State Tourism Deptt. In 2007, the tourists are allowed only up to the second level of fort. The satellite imagery study reveals that the geo materials and geomorphic characteristics around Manora Fort adversely affected the structures. Further conservation is needed to survive this eight storied Fort raising to a height of 23M., since it represents cultural monument of Thanjavur rulings in the Coastal Sea Beaches of Bay of Bengal. The additional upgrading and reclamation of ground level is required as protective measure of the coastal Manora Fort to develop as prominent Tourist and Heritage Site of Dravidian Architecture in South India.
