Floating Architecture – An Improved Way of Living

Kriti Nathani

Abstract

Due to climatic changes, dearth of usable land, abundant water quota of the Earth surface, and rising income of the people, floating building is emerging as a strong and attractive alternate to the inland housing system. The intention of this research is to share some reference ideas for new building projects in and around water bodies through review of various projects. A new paradigm of architecture is outlined as a unique system integrated with concept and movements like sustainability. Floating building on the water is already an ideal example of architecture comparing with the preconception of building on the land and current building regulations. New features from the sample projects can be suggested as building on the sea, modular construction, application of various renewable energy resources, use of local material, long-term usage, conservation of natural environment, and economical sustainability through global mobility.
