Abstract

In 1980, Dehradun was called the ‘city with green hedges and grey hair’ or we can say ‘a green, tranquil, cool, clean, sleepy town surrounded by rivers and forests with no apparent population pressure.’ After 2000 when Dehradun become a capital of Uttarakhand, people immigrated from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Garhwal to the city in search of jobs and better facilities. Population of Dehradun increases and the demand of housing and infrastructure is also increasing simultaneously. To fulfill the demand of shelter, the vegetation and barren land is converting into built up areas and concrete jungle has been seen ever where. Overcrowding and traffic is the major problem faces city today. The objective of this study to emphasis the journey of city from 1676 when Guru Ram Rai elder son of 7th Sikh guru-guru Harrai came here and the town known as gurudwara or Dehradun meaning camp in valley to till date. Aim to publish/research comparative study to see how the population, climate, infrastructure and architectural changes have been seen. The socio-economic impact has been analyzed in the end after the feedback or discussion with resident of Dehradun who are living in city since last 20 years. The opinion of green to grey is analyzed and come out with recommendations in the conclusion.
