Abstract

Urban agglomeration is a result of population diffusion from metropolitan centres due to land scarcity. This has created complex problems such as deficiency of land, inward and outward movement of people around the areas. It also influences the economic, social, spatial segregation of population between the core cities and peripheral areas. Semmancheri is one among the peri-urban area in Chennai facing serious problems like dynamism of planning issues and land use transformation. This research helps in understanding the problems and issues of Semmancheri, the various changes that it underwent due to urban sprawl. It also delivers development proposals to cater to the demand of the existing and growing population by analyzing the existing land use and infrastructure facilities of the town.
