Abstract

Due to global urbanization, metropolitan cities are facing more major problems, especially with respect to parking management. Increase in population in metropolitan cities increases the use of private transportation.  Due to increase in vehicular traffic, there is a constant imbalance between parking demand and parking supply. The traditional parking management system consumes a lot of time spent in looking for a parking space in a busy area. The parking problem is a noticeable one in urbanization, which needs to be tackled by changing or renewing the governing principles of parking policy.  This paper examines the current parking planning practices in Purasaiwakkam high road, one of the busy commercial places in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The study is carried out by investigating the land use, traffic demand, traffic congestion, availability of parking spaces and calculation of on-street parking and off-street parking. This paper proposes new parking management system using mobile application technology as a key for a hazzle free, quick parking and also generates new policy guidelines for the parking management on Purasaiwakkam high road.
