Quality of Open Space: A Comparative Analysis Using Space Matrix

Abstract

The understanding of how various open spaces around us operate and still remain unseen in the larger context of culture was the key factor to approach this topic. It is an insight into the quality of open spaces through a significant recognition of the definite elements that affect them. This paper aims at studying the open spaces within various building typologies through an analytical point of view as to how they affect the perception of designers and daily lives of the user groups. A categorical method, i.e., space matrix, was employed for the basis of observations and inferences from different case studies. A diverse number of qualities were studied keeping Sir Gordon Cullen’s “A Concise Townscape” as a major reference. These qualities framed with the case studies into the space matrix allowed for extracting relevant data into graphical representations which one may perceive as a general outlook for current state of open spaces or utilize for the procedural technique to study such spaces at further period.
