Urban Design Strategies for Elder-friendly Spaces

Archana Sreedharan, Nirmal Chandy Mathew

Abstract

The study focusses on how urban design strategies could be adapted to make elder-friendly quality spaces, which would aid other age groups also. The project is carried out in two stages where the former uses a correlative approach in understanding the elderly age group and their spatial quality in relation to the identified environment types. These results are summarized and collected in the “chart of prime environment strategies.” The latter stage establishes the relation between the environment space quality and neighborhood outdoor components through an analytical approach by incorporating the evolved urban design strategies on neighborhood site components.
