Sustainability Methods in Teaching the Arch-Design Studio for Uncommon Financial Delivery

Abstract


This study is an exploration of sustainability teaching and learning ways and methods in arch-design studio where architects are groomed in training. The aim, therefore, is to search and find ways and methods of teaching the arch-design studio with sustainability ideas for great and positive economic or financial growth. If this is realised, it means that the students would be trained in designing with sustainability ideas and therefore, we can have professionals that design and build with effective consideration to environment, equity, esthetics and, especially, economic (4Es) for creative sustainability. It means that we can have beautiful buildings and places that satisfy our clients and the society and are in harmony with the environment and buildings that clients can build with solid economic consideration. The topic is very relevant and timely as arch-educators and other stakeholders are of the opinion that something has to be done to improve the ways and methods of training architects, especially the teaching of the arch-design studio with respect to sustainability with financial undertone. The study through exploration and critical review of the literature, telephone and emails responses from the stakeholders (academics and non-academics—practicing architects, related and non-related professionals, users, manufacturers and the public), finds ways and methods of teaching with sustainability ideas in the arch-design studio with economic gains.
