Reflection of Culture on Architecture

Sheeba Valsson

Abstract

Cultural influences have moulded the way spaces have been designed and used for various activities and functions. It is clearly possible to understand various things about a culture through architecture such as lifestyle, artistic sensibilities and social culture These influences are observed not only in areas of ritualistic and religious importance such as temples and mosques, but also the design of residences has seen a direct impact of the cultural practices prevalent during the time. The author through this research tries to put forward a statement that culture and architecture are two sides of the same coin. Architecture will never or should never deviate from the Culture. This paper first tries to clarify the meaning of culture and then through various examples tries to establish a relationship between culture and the built environment and illustrate the cultural expressions in Architecture.
