Abstract

In this paper there are details and proposals of “Ashokan Rock Edict” at Dehradun Circle of ASI. The inscription came into light after the excavation of 1860 by John Forrest. The rock edict is situated at Kalsi, Dehradun. There are 14 rock edicts of same kind in the country and this rock edict in Dehradun is one of its kind in north India. Knowing about the history of this monument will help people to connect form the past of the locality or Dehradun. The inscription is ASI protected but it receives a minimal footfall, the size of site is too small, and this area has a least connectivity from the main city. It doesn’t provide any economic benefits to the government. This paper is giving the brief about the details, problems and proposals about the site. The source of all this information is divided in two parts- primary data and secondary data. The primary data consists of site visits, interviews of local people and the ASI staff. The secondary data has the information about the ASI the laws according to which the site is maintained by ASI. This paper is a step to change the local people views about the site and also propose interventions to increase the footfall on the site.
