Investigating of Surface Temperature Changes in the Urmia City between 2000 and 2020

Abstract

Investigating surface temperature is one of the most interesting topics for environmentalists. The use of sensors with thermal bands have a special ability to record the temperature changes of cities as centers of population concentration. In this study, Landsat 7 and 8 images in 2000 and 2020 years were used to investigate the thermal island changes of Urmia city surface. After the initial preprocessing, the single-channel algorithm method was used to prepare the surface temperature map. The results of 2000 showed three homogeneous areas of soil and rock, city, and vegetation cover that had the highest temperatures, respectively. In 2020, however, the maximum temperatures in these three areas are related to rock and soil, vegetation cover, and city. The results of temperature changes in this period showed that the average temperature decrease in the city is more than 12 degrees, which formed a cold island in the city, due to changes in the type of building cover and cause the reflective roofs phenomenon.
