A Review on Rural Development Programmes in India

Abstract


The Rural development usually refers to the complete process of enhancing the quality of life and economic well-being of people living in relatively isolated and sparsely populated areas. Of late, rural development has drawn global attention especially among the developing nations. It has great consequence for a country like India where majority of the population, (around 65% of the people), live in rural areas. The present strategy of rural development in India mainly focuses on better livelihood opportunities, poverty alleviation, provision of basic amenities and infrastructure facilities through innovative programmes of wage and self-employment. The present paper overviews the role and function of the Government and its’ programmes for rural development in India. The inventions in Science and Technology in the field of rural development have been discussed briefly and efforts being made to document some of the appropriate technologies developed by several research organizations, institutes suitable for application in rural areas are recorded. In this paper, based on the secondary data, an attempt has been made to comprehensively understand the development effort to rebuild the rural life and livelihood on the basis of various secondary data.
