Green Roofing Materials in Vernacular Residential Buildings: Case Study in Kashan, Iran

Elham Maghsoudi Nia, Nordin Abd Rahman, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos

Abstract

Negative impacts on the environment have been increased due to the human activities including usage of improper materials in buildings. As a solution, green materials, which are suitable for environment, can be used in the buildings. Roofing materials play a significant role in sustainability issues. They can provide environmental advantages if the materials meet the green criteria. The master builders in the past, considered the sustainability criteria in their constructions. This study conducted semi-structure interviews and observations to investigate roofing materials in vernacular residential buildings (VRB) in Kashan. The results indicate that the several factors including region and environment, structural issues and economy had effects on selecting the materials. Therefore, the vernacular roofing materials were cheap, recyclable, locally obtained, resistant, durable, green and ecofriendly. This study recommends consideration of reusing these vernacular materials and adapting them to contemporary developments.
