Indoor Air Pollutants: Major Types, Health Concerns and Remedies

Tasaduq Hussain Wani, Neetu Singh, Sayima Qayoom Wani

Abstract

Indoor health quality directly affects human health as maximum life spent of human is indoor. In 2002, according to WHO health report, the indoor air quality is recognized as a significant factor in human health maintenance. Air pollutants can be present in our environment in any state that can be unseen from the human eyes such as solid particles, liquid and gases that can adversely affect the ecosystem and human health. Approximately 3% of BoD (Burden of Disease) is directly caused by indoor pollutants which is high in developing countries. Several diseases that are related to respiratory and pulmonary are caused by bad indoor air quality. Air pollutants nowadays become prone to human health and to the environment. Air pollutants can be categorized as biological pollutants, chemical pollutants, physical pollutants, radiation pollutants and particulate pollution. Due to indoor pollution, several diseases related to health are increasing day to day that can create adverse effects to human’s life. Indoor pollutants can cause harmful effects related to respiratory and pulmonary problems, ophthalmic problems, cancer, etc., which can cause more than two million deaths that occur globally. Biologically pollutants like mold can induce immunoglobulin-mediated antibody responses and allergic reactions. Toxic accumulation due to indoor pollution and smoke absorption can lead to discoloration of lens and cataract. The indoor air pollutants can be controlled by human itself from avoiding smoke, contaminant control, humidity management, ventilation management and filtration control.
