Use of Rammed Earth as Building Material

Anannya jha, Ridima Agrawal

Abstract

Studies says the home of the future will be made using more natural, greener and earth-friendly building options, as people continue to lean towards making more sustainable and ecologically aware lifestyle and consumption choices. This switching of thought process has turned the spotlight to processes and practices from the ancient past, because some of them have been rediscovered to still be as relevant, and sometimes even better, than modern solutions. One of these old-age practices that are coming to competition today is the concept of building with rammed earth construction. Compared to the methods and materials of traditional rammed earth, stabilized rammed earth improves the energy performance and gives structural strength to the walls. It is a low-carbon masonry wall material that combines earth-building techniques with modern commercial technologies and building practices. The product is a durable material that is cost-effective and infinitely recyclable but with high quality and beauty. This report contains a brief idea about the rammed earth as main building material, construction technique and benefits of rammed earth walls. It also focuses on the method of stabilizing and enhancing the strength of outcome.
