Importance of Light in Shaping Spaces

Abstract

Walking down the streets, night falls and street lamps turn on… this happening is so natural that one does not even notices it, only if, these lights wouldn’t work we pay attention to them. And yet, studies show lighting and its optimization as a major factor in the attractiveness, security, and economy of municipalities.
Importance of light in shaping a space, the space being as extensive as a city or just a small bedroom, is distinctly noticeable. However, better understanding of lighting according to the space is needed.
A space could have some unique character of its own, which can be accentuated using light to create its individual identity. For example, every city has its own individual character which is needed to be highlighted to frame an image of the city. This image shapes the scenario of the city in people’s mind. Here, light can act as an important factor in drawing attention or better revealing the actual self of the city.
